Narrow-leafed Ivan tea or fireweed is a perennial herb 50-150 cm high. The plant can be recognized by its thick creeping rhizome and collected in tassels, purplish-pink, red with violet tint, pale pink or white flowers. Ivan-tea blooms from June to August.
The plant contains a large amount of nutrients. This tannin, flavonoids, mucus, pectin and vitamin B, C. Moreover, Ivan-tea is several times ahead of lemon in terms of vitamin C content.
The plant is also a very good honey plant, since each flower contains about 25 mg. nectar. In Ivan tea, there is also an easily digestible protein in the body. 100 gr. green mass of willow tea contains iron (2, 3 mg), nickel (1, 3 mg), copper (2, 3 mg), manganese (16 mg), titanium (1, 3 mg), molybdenum (0, 44 mg ), boron (6 mg), as well as a significant amount of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, lithium.
Ivan tea – types and places of growth
Among the most famous types of willow tea can be distinguished fireweed narrow-leaved and small-flowered fireweed, which are very similar for their medicinal properties.
The plant prefers the soil of moist meadows, hills, the area along roads and forest glades, dried swamps. As a rule, Ivan tea forms thickets, grows on sunbeds or in the places of former settlements. The plant is distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere, including the CIS countries.
Ivan tea – healing properties
Ivan tea has a sedative effect on the body, which is equated with the action of Valerian officinalis. Decoctions and infusions of the plant have anti-inflammatory, astringent, diaphoretic, enveloping and antibacterial properties.
Traditional medicine will use Ivan tea to treat the whole body. Water infusion of leaves of fireweed effectively copes with headaches, stomach ulcers, and also regulates metabolism and stimulates the work of the heart. A decoction of willow-tea leaves has a hypnotic and sedative effect.
